• Nekrolog, 1967. 2 Niels (later Nels) Hansen Olsen, the son of Karen & Laurits Olsen, was born on September 14, 1887 in St. Rise, Denmark on the Island of Aero in Fyn County. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Denmark and grew to manhood there.
In July, 1907, at the age of 19 years, he departed from Copenhagen, Denmark on the Ship "United States" immigrating to America where he settled in Shelby County and spent the rest of his life there. He received his naturalization papers on October 2, 1945 at Council Bluffs, IA.
He married Ane Margrethe Laugesen on Februray 11, 1914 in Harlan, IA and became the father of seven children: Agneta, Ruby, Helmer, Mary Jane, Betty, Darlene & Erma Lee.
They farmed near Harlan until 1943 when they moved to their farm in Clay township, southeast of Elk Horn. It was there he died, after a lingering illness, on April 3, 1967 at the age of 79 years, 6 months and 19 days.
He was a charter member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan and after moving to Elk Horn transferred his membership to the Elk Horn Lutheran Church.
Preceding him in death were his parents; daughter Mary Jane at the age of 8; granddaughter, Dorothy Jensen and two brothers, Olaf & Peter Olsen.
In addition to his wife, Anna, he was survived by his other five daughters and their spouses; his son; 21 grandchildren and a sister Christena in Denmark.
