Nels Peter Petersen was born January 3, 1859, at Vorberg, Underup Sogn, Denmark, the son of Peter S. and Mettie Betker.
He came to America July 6, 1882, to Hutchinson, Minnesota, where an older brother had already settled.
Nels and Miss Mathilda Jensen were united in marriage in 1890, the couple residing in Minneapolis for the next four years. The Petersens then made their home in the Heatwole community for the following 33 years, moving in to Hutchinson September of 1927. Six children were born to the couple.
Mr. Petersen was survived by his wife, Mathilda; four sons: Ben C., Walter, Elmer and Emil; one daughter, Bertha (Mrs. Louis Hanke); two sisters: Mrs. Knut Rasmussen of Hutchinson and and Mrs. M.L. Thompson of Washington; three brothers: Chris Betker of Washington, Simon P. Betker and John Betker both of Hutchinson; and 13 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Arthur, in 1933.
